Lighting "therapy"
12th April 2001
A.C. Lighting combines with lighting consultants Minds Eye in retail project for House of Fraser.
A.C. Lighting in conjunction with consultants Minds Eye have completed an installation in London's world famous Oxford Street. The project on behalf of House of Fraser, was a key part of the opening of a uniquely branded department created in the basement area of the store with a separate entrance from the street. The department, named "therapy", was specifically designed to promote a broad line of designer fashion and beauty ranges to a younger clientele within an environment that complemented the modern image of the goods. The whole concept is new with video walls, glass walkways, a catwalk, a resident DJ, new mannequins, and revolutionary changing rooms making the shopping experience a very exciting one. Therefore, the entrance to the department was of vital importance in establishing the ambience of "therapy"
The initial creative idea was to use a scheme of back lighting, however, detailed technical evaluation of the site indicated the potential for structural problems and high associated costs. The concept of constantly changing colour washes, drawing shoppers attention to the "therapy" logo, was still the preferred scheme and therefore the challenge was to create this effect using front mounted luminaires.
The solution was specified by Douglas James of London based company Minds Eye, who are lighting consultants to the Technical Services Department at House of Fraser. Douglas consulted with A.C. Lighting's Special Projects Manager, Peter Keiderling, who devised a lighting scheme using a combination of 8 Clay Paky Stage Color 300 and 2 Clay Paky Stage Light 300, all under the control of a Pulsar Masterpiece 216 Replay Unit. The Clay Paky luminaires were custom manufactured in a white powder coated finish to meet the interior design requirements of the project. A.C. Lighting carried out the installation and programmed the display using a Pulsar Masterpiece 216 under the creative direction of Douglas James before handing the system over to House of Fraser.
Douglas James supported Peter Keiderling's statement that "By using Stage Color 300's we achieve performance levels formerly only provided by much larger, more powerful luminaires. The fixtures compact size offers a number of important advantages including ease of installation and low operating cost, whilst providing the reliability and durability expected of a Clay Paky product."
